platelets "why are they important?"

Platelets are the most needed component in any Donor Program, and are the most expensive when purchased from an outside source.

During a platelet donation, we will collect one, two, or three units of platelets. A technician will recommend the number of units based on Donor's weight, hemoglobin level, and platelet count that day.

A triple platelet donation can provide up to 3 therapeutic doses to be transfused.  This can be used for either 3 separate patients or 3 doses for a single patient!

Platelets can only be stored for 5 days - that means we need to continually replenish the supply, especially before weekends and around holidays.

Platelet donations can be made up to 24 times per year!
